A Top Media Market
Denver currently ranks #17 among Top 20 Media Markets in the U.S. Just below Miami on Nielsen’s DMA Rankings for 2020, Denver has become an important media market.
With over 300 days of sunshine, four major league sports teams (Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets, & Avalanche) and one of the most pedestrian friendly downtown’s in the U.S. and endless craft breweries to choose from, Denver has quickly climbed the ranks. Notably, Denver also has one of the most walkable downtowns in the Nation – 16th Street Mall is for pedestrians only.
The Mile-High City is also home to 200 parks within the city and 20,000 acres of parks in the nearby mountains, including the impressive Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater which hosts musicians & artists from across the globe. And, sports fans love that Denver boasts three major sports stadiums within a one-mile radius of downtown. For these reasons, Denver is quickly gaining residents, and it’s outdoorsy lifestyle has become the ideal backdrop for out-of-home media!
Out-of-Home Advertising Works
Out-of-home advertising has become more important than ever. People no longer consume media the same way they used to. Many consumers have cancelled their cable subscriptions. Spotify and Pandora have replaced terrestrial radio. Consumers now “tune out” traditional advertising whose messages have become over-saturated.
The impact of out-of-home media is expanding fast. In 2019, OOH ad revenue experienced the most growth in more than a decade, up 7.7% last year alone. According to a 2019 Out-of-Home Advertising Study done by Nielsen, a whopping 66% of smartphone users took action on their smart phones after seeing an outdoor ad. In addition, the study found OOH to be under-allocated in media budgets. This can lead to lower effectiveness of media investments. Often, brands allocate a greater share of ad budgets to radio, print, and digital display as part of their media mix. However, out-of-home has been proven to produce a higher return on investment. When combined with digital search, out-of-home produces a 40% increase in effectiveness.
According to an article in eMarketer: “OOH advertising spend will grow faster than most other traditional ad mediums this year.” One advantage OOH has over other mediums is that well-placed outdoor ads can be hard for people to ignore. Between 2018 and 2021, out-of-home media is expected to grow by and estimated 10%.
