San Diego Comic-Con

Ah, summer. A time for fun in the sun…or fun underneath a roof! For fans of pop culture, the San Diego Comic-Con beckons: it takes place July 18-21, 2019 at the San Diego Convention Center (located near the Marina District in downtown San Diego).

While this convention was once limited to comic books and science fiction and fantasy, it has now broadened to include all genres. It showcases books, films, and TV in the areas of horror, animation, anime, Manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, and web comics (to name a few).

It holds several Guinness World Records for the largest annual comic and pop culture festival in the world.

The convention features panels (with actors, writers, and artists), seminars, and workshops, as well as previews for films, portfolio review sessions, and new video game debuts. Annual events include a costume contest, an independent film festival (with films not yet purchased), and 350 hours of other pop culture programming.

There’s plenty of space for exhibitors as well. Media companies, movie studios, comic book dealers, collectible merchants, and the like are all featured prominently and peddling their wares. There’s an autograph session too where people can get ink from artists, models, and other celebrities.

The first San Diego Comic-Con took place in 1970 and had a whopping 300 people in attendance. Since then, interest has boomed, going from a convention attractive to comic book devotees (think the cast of the Big Bang Theory) to a convention that appeals to anyone interested in film, TV, and books.  In present day, San Diego Comic-Con draws an average, annual crowd of more than 130,000 people (and probably some Klingons).
