How effective is Billboard Advertising?

You’d be hard-pressed to go into any major city and not see a billboard……or 80. Densely-populated areas are heavily populated with billboards for one reason: they work! In fact, over 70 percent of Americans look at billboards during their commute. Everyone likes a little reading material when in stop-and-go traffic.

Not only do people notice billboards, but they’re also persuaded by them. Studies suggest that 56% of people go to an event because they saw it on a billboard, 58% of people learn about new restaurants from billboards (and then visit said restaurants), and 44% of people watch a TV show when cued by a billboard (even if they already know about it, the billboard offers a subtle reminder to tune in).

Billboards also act as supplemental forms of advertising, pushing people to the internet. The Outdoor Advertising Association of America reported that outdoor advertising helps drive online activity more than any other form of advertising. Of course, billboards aren’t the only form of outdoor advertising, but they’re the largest factor.

Why do billboards work?

If comes down to:

Visibility: Billboards are placed in areas with lots of people. There’s a reason Times Square in NYC is filled with them and the middle of Wyoming isn’t.

Quick communication: In a world where everyone is in a rush, billboards communicate fast and efficiently. They tell people what they need to know in a few lines.

Affordability: The cost of a billboard varies widely based on size, location, and specs, but the overall cost stays affordable because of the value. Billboards are the simplest way to expose products, services, and events to large, hungry crowds. And that’s the first step in the sale – before people buy your product, they have to know about it.
